The history of the "Roy" family
of Couvet, Canton of Neuchâtel

The history of the Roy family in France begins in 1802... My four-great-grandfather Abraham-Henry Roy (born 10 August 1774, died 14 December 1850) leaves his village of Couvet in the "chastellenie du Vaux Travers" in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerlandand settles in Rouen in Normandy, then in 1818, founds his watchmaking factory in Sainte Austreberthe, 15 miles from Rouen. His son, Henry-Julien dit Henri or Henry Roy (my great-great-grandfather) was born in 1827... and the history , our story, accelerates.
Portrait of Henry-Julien dit Henri Roy born in Sainte-Austreberthe in 1827, died in 1908.

And here below, press interview with my great-aunt, sister of my grandfather Joseph Roy
Article dated March 23, 1982 !
Watchmakers from father to son for 70 years
so that all the bell towers of Normandy ring out on time...
In pictures, the factory, the team and some monumental clocks...
In two hundred years of history, companies evolve and the name of the Manufacture Roy changes over time…

The Roy factory, founded in 1818 by Abraham-Henri Roy (1774-1850) is initially dedicated to the manufacture of all timepieces, clocks, parquet clocks, pocket watches ... The factory is transformed over the years and the heirs ... The Fabrique d'Horloges Publiques H. Roy specializes first of all in monumental clocks for public buildings, but continues to produce clocks and other pocket watches...

Then it seems that in 1895, the name changes into "ROY Frères à Ste-Austreberthe, Horloges publiques", and the "watch" activity disappears. The brothers in question are Auguste Roy, my great-grandfather who is in charge of the manufacture and his brother Abraham, in charge of the installation of the clocks.

Just berfore the war, or in the early 1940s, my grandfather Joseph Roy left the family business, apparently for" what are known as family reasons", and founded his own transport company. He was shot by the Nazis in 1942 for acts of resistance.

Then ... Berthe, one of Auguste Roy's daughters, sister of Joseph, married Gustave Biard and in 1957, and the company changed its name to Biard-Roy.
Since then the company Biard-Roy, specialized in the manufacture of monumental clocks and bells, has no longer produced a single watch.

It was in 2011 that Michel Fréret-Roy, your servant, launched his first collection of watches under the name of Fréret Roy 1818.
The circle is complete, and in two hundred years of history, the Roys are still watchmakers... Who will be the next ?

Roy & Henri Roy parquet clocks, between 1840-1870

Since the mid-1970s, I have searched and browsed for clocks and pocket watches produced by my four-great-grandfather Abraham-Henry Roy and my great-great-grandfather Henri Roy, because in my family branch, the war had scattered what was left of Roy's clocks and watches...

I even investigated very seriously when I was working as a financial analyst (yes!) in a bank in Normandy, in the early 1980s, when I was a young graduate. Impossible to find one to buy ! There were only monumental clocks at the top of church and town hall towers... but sometimes a rare parquet clock appeared, signed Roy or H. Roy or Henri Roy, which was not for sale. I had even found one in a hotel in Caen, as welle as one, owned by the parents of a brother-in-law of mine by marriage ...

Here are pictures, taken at the Fréret-Roy shop, of our first parquet clocks signed Roy in Ste Austreberte around 1820 and Henri Roy in Ste Austreberte around 1850. At that time, Ste Austreberthe was written without an "h" after the "t".  We acquired these clocks a few years ago for our "small museum".

Henri Roy pocket watches, between 1830-1860

Here are the first Henri Roy pocket watches that I found ...

As I wrote above, since the mid-1970s, I have been searching and hunting for pocket watches produced by my great-great-grandfather Henri Roy... which were until recently impossible to find... but by chance, I ended up finding two specimens!

The first is signed and in poor condition, I will see if it is possible to "improve" it a little and find a compatible case for it, which should not be too difficult.

The dial of the second one is not signed, but I bought it at the same time. It must have been out of sight for a long time, as it is almost new and works perfectly. The movements are identical, keywound. I date them approximately from 1830/1860. I will continue to search other specimens, especially in Normandy, cradle of the family and of the manufacture... I found these watches totally by chance, without looking for them, on ebay! The history goes on.

And for the record, if we blame the brands that equip their watches with ETA movements of all ills, it is clear that, in the past, most watch manufacturers were assembling, buying their cases or having them manufactured, buying their dials and customizing them, buying their movements... And assembling the whole thing... Nothing really changes.

A few monumental clocks at the top of church and town hall towers
discovered here and there in Normandy...
H. Roy clock, in La Bouille, near Rouen
In a small street in the well-known village of La Bouille, on the left bank of the Seine downstream from Rouen, stands this private bell tower with a H. ROY clock, on the roof of a private house ... When we went there, there was nobody to open the door and tell us about this clock. We will try to collect some information again the next time we visit this charming village.

In 2005, Michel Fréret-Roy

opened his store at the corner of Place Vendôme and Rue de la Paix in Paris.

The Vacheron Constantin brand, our neighbour, implemented its shop somes years after us...

In 2011, the family tradition in wristwatch making is reborn under the name Fréret Roy 1818
This unusual and offbeat portrait of Michel Fréret-Roy has become the signature of the Fréret Roy 1818 brand.
